Diversity colours the growth and development of these communities. In a larger picture, these processes can also generate disharmony and conflict between groups, communities and nations. In addition to being increasingly politically and culturally diverse, Asians have become more connected to one another due to globalisation, human mobility and the increasing use of information technology. This paradox of diversity as well as interconnectivity is very real and tangible for many of us in our respective communities. How do we stay connected and yet celebrate our differences? How do we find a sense of balance between the push and pull factors that affect us? The issues of diversity, interconnectivity as well as empowerment feature significantly not only in academic discourses but also in the daily lives of ordinary people, especially when gender becomes the focal point or indeed the point of contention.
