Aberystwyth, Wales, United Kingdom
On 5-6 December 2008, the Centre for the Study of ‘Radicalisation' and Contemporary Political Violence (CSRV), based in the Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University, will host a conference exploring how cycles of political violence end. The conference is part of a series of seminars, funded by the ESRC with additional financial support from BISA, on under-studied aspects of what is variably called ‘terrorism', ‘political violence' or ‘radicalisation', but which for reasons of inclusivity we refer to as ‘political violence'. The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars, policy-makers and practitioners from different disciplines and with different area expertises to advance our understanding of the factors that play a part in the transition away from political violence. While theories of what causes political violence abound, research focusing on how it ends is still embryonic. This conference seeks to expand the burgeoning academic interest in this under-theorised area of study. The focus will be on militant non-state organisations but the impact of political violence by states on the evolution of militant organisations will form an integral part of the research framework.
